Uluu awarded $1.5 million Carbon Innovation Grant

We’re excited to share that Uluu has been awarded $1.5 million in funding from the Government of Western Australia to scale production of our plastic alternative made from seaweed.

The funding will support the construction of Uluu’s Capacity Plant, enabling us to deliver meaningful product volumes to our brand and manufacturing partners.

At Uluu, we produce natural materials called polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) by fermenting farmed seaweed in saltwater. These materials can replace petrochemical plastics while remaining biodegradable - helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels, while tackling plastic pollution and improving ocean health.

The funding was awarded through the Government of Western Australia's Carbon Innovation Grants Program, administered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.

The program is part of the WA Government’s Climate Action Fund, and supports projects that avoid, reduce or offset carbon emissions with a focus on supporting innovative technologies.

Uluu was one of a small number of companies awarded funding for pilot projects and capital works.

At commercial scale, our process has the potential to avoid and sequester  approximately 5 kg of CO₂e per kilogram of material produced.

At global scale, our technology could reduce global CO₂emissions by more than 2 gigatonnes per year.

With the Capacity Plant now underway, we’re continuing to build the foundations for a new materials economy – one that works with nature, rather than against it.
